An eclectic group of sixth-graders arrives to compete at the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, each eager to win for very different reasons. Sweet Olive brings her bookish best friend with her; bold and hyper-allergic William uses his “magic foot” to propel him to greatness; former champion Chip struggles with his burgeoning…puberty; distracted Leaf doesn’t think he’s smart enough to be a challenger; overachiever Marcy is disappointed with consistent success; and precocious Logainne only wants to impress her dads. A story told through hilarious, touching and catchy songs, each speller reveals their hopes and struggles as they make their way through the competition. With a score by William Finn, a book by Rachel Sheinkin, conceived by Rebecca Feldman with additional material by Jay Reiss, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” causes audiences to fall in love, both with the show itself and its “perspicacious,” “jocular” and “effervescent” spellers.
