My Name is Asher Lev

February 18th @ 7:00pm - 8:30pm

PLEASE NOTE: Auditions will be held at the Westford Parish Center for the Arts (10 Lincoln Street, Westford, MA) on the second floor.

Show Synopsis

Follow the journey of a young Jewish painter torn between his Hassidic upbringing and his desperate need to fulfill his artistic promise. When his artistic genius threatens to destroy his relationship with his parents and community, young Asher realizes he must make a difficult choice between art and faith. This stirring adaptation of a modern classic presents a heartbreaking and triumphant vision of what it means to be an artist.

Characters

The ages listed represent the range or potential range of the character, not the actor. Each actor may need to play characters at or of different ages.

Asher Lev (6-20+)
The narrator and focus of the story; a prodigy torn between his Hassidic upbringing and his need to fulfill his artistic promise.

Aryeh Lev (30’s-40’s)
Asher’s father, a devout Jew who cannot understand his son’s need to draw and paint, rather than study Torah.

Rivkeh Lev (30’s)
Asher’s mother, trying to bridge the gap between her husband and son, and with her own needs and challenges.

The following characters may be played by Asher’s father and mother, or may be played by different actor:

Yitzchok Lev (30’s-40’s)
Asher’s uncle, a man with joie de vivre and the first to recognize his talent

Rebbe (60+)
Wise, learned Head Rabbi of their Hassidic community. When he speaks, everyone listens.

Jacob Kahn (70’s)
Professional artist and Asher’s mentor; a Jew, but no longer observant; often blunt.

Anna Schaeffer (30’s-50’s)
Anna runs an important NYC art gallery. She will promote Asher’s works – if and when he is good enough.

Rachel (20’s-30’s)
Artist’s model; She has kind eyes and a somber, delicate beauty. She will pose at least partially in the nude.
