The Nashoba Players are pleased to announce open auditions for their Spring 2025 production of Terence McNally‘s Mothers and Sons.
Auditions will be held on Saturday February 1, 2025 starting at 2:30 pm at the Parish Center for the Arts (10 Lincoln Street, Westford, MA). No pre-registration is required. Please bring a copy of your head shot and theater resume, if available.
Production Dates: May 23, 24, 30 and 31.
All roles are open. We are looking to cast two adult men, one mature woman and one boy.
Mother and Sons is a funny and powerful play. Katherine, a recent widow, pays an unexpected visit to the New York City apartment of her late son's partner, Cal. Cal is now in his 40s has subsequently married a new husband, Will. They are raising a 6-year old son, Bud.
When her son, Andre, passed away many years ago, Cal held a memorial which Katherine silently attended. Cal then mailed Andre's journal to her. Katherine, who is on her way to Europe (from Texas) uses the pretext of her N.Y. layover to visit Cal unannounced and return Andre's journal unopened.
Generations and cultures collide, eyes are opened, dreams are debated and hearts warmed in a very human way on a chilly late winter's afternoon.
The roles being cast are specifically:
Katherine (60s/70s) - A formidable woman, originally from New York and transplanted to Texas many years ago. But she still considers herself a New Yorker at heart. She never understood her son's life "choices" and really never wanted to acknowledge reality. Katherine feels cheated by life. She has always been known as a daughter, a wife, and a mother - and never just as herself.
Cal (40s) - A successful money manager, and a good husband and father. He's attractive, extremely affable, and honest man. Cal has come to terms with Andre's passing and has moved on with his life. He grieved Andre's life but has let go of any bitterness. He is fully focused on his current family, but is understanding of Katherine's situation.
Will (late 20s/early 30s) - An accomplished stay-at-home dad and writer. He too is fully focused on his current life, but has been living with the specter of Andre for many years. Will is a good, if a bit woke, dad and husband.
Bud (must appear as under 10) - A very bright, well-adjusted, polite and loving 6-year old child.
The play is presented uninterrupted and runs about 90 minutes.
These open call auditions will consist of readings from the script. We ask you to arrive as close as you can to our start time and plan stay until you’re released.
Callbacks, if needed, will be held on Monday, February 3, 2025 at 7:00 pm and will be announced at the open call.
