The play starts with a mock battle scene from the period piece "Cyrano De Bergerac". Meanwhile backstage, Rosalind has brought her new beau, Howard, to meet her parents. Charlotte's mother Ethel is in the company and fights endlessly with George. Rosalind's ex-boyfriend Paul is also in the theater group. It is revealed that Eileen, another member of the company, is pregnant with George's baby. George's wife, Charlotte decides to leave him for their lawyer Richard Maynard. Meanwhile, George's agent calls him to tell him that he's up for a part in Frank Capra's next movie and that Capra is on his way to see George in the matinee that afternoon. Charlotte doesn't believe George and leaves anyway. George goes out and comes back stinking drunk. Charlotte finds out that Capra is, indeed, coming and she and the company try to sober George up for the performance. More chaos ensues.
